Roberts titled this view "Sarda," recording the Phoenician port of Sidon on the Lebanese coast, where he made his drawing on 28 April 1839 during his travels in the Levant. Louis Haghe turned the sketch into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F. G. Moon between 1842 and 1845, when European readers were eager for images of biblical and ancient places. Sidon was a major Mediterranean trading city long before the Roman era, and its harbor and shoreline are worth noticing for the link they show between the modern town and that long maritime history.
