Roberts dated this view of Sidon to April 28, 1839, and the print reproduces his drawing in color. Sidon is a coastal city in present-day Lebanon, once a major Phoenician port, and the sea and harbor give the scene much of its character. Louis Haghe transferred Roberts's work to stone for *The Holy Land*, which F.G. Moon issued in London in parts during the early 1840s, and this plate appears in the second volume. Roberts traveled through the Levant and Egypt in these years, and his views became some of the most widely circulated images of the region in Britain.
