Roberts drew Tyre from its isthmus on April 27, 1839, showing the city the way it looked from the narrow land link to the mainland. Tyre was a Phoenician port that once stood on an island, and the causeway Alexander the Great built to reach it during his siege in 332 BCE is what joined it to the shore. Roberts made the sketch on his journey through the Near East, and Louis Haghe turned it into this color lithograph for the second volume of *The Holy Land*, published in London in the early 1840s. The series was prized for bringing the region's ruins and towns to readers who could not travel there themselves.
