Dated April 27, 1839, this view shows the harbor at Tyre, the ancient Phoenician port on the coast of present-day Lebanon. David Roberts made the sketch during his tour of the Near East that year, and Louis Haghe turned it into a color lithograph for the second volume of *The Holy Land*, published in London in the 1840s. Tyre had been a major trading center for centuries, and Alexander the Great's siege in 332 BC famously joined the island city to the mainland with a causeway, a change that makes the shoreline in such views worth studying closely.
