Drawn on the spot on April 24, 1839, this view of Acre records the Mediterranean port as David Roberts found it during his tour of the Holy Land. The town was then under Egyptian rule, only a year before British, Austrian and Ottoman forces bombarded it in 1840 and returned it to Ottoman control. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's sketch into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, which F.G. Moon published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. The print is valued as a document of the city's appearance just before those upheavals.
