Roberts sketched these ruins at Om El Hamed, near the ancient Phoenician port of Tyre, on April 25, 1839, during the journey that produced his Holy Land views. Roberts, a Scottish-born painter who later became a Royal Academician, drew on the spot, and Louis Haghe translated those sketches into this color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, issued in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. Haghe's skill with tinted stone made the plates among the most admired topographical prints of their day. Seen in the 1840s, the image gave readers a view of a little-visited coast before photography had reached the region.
