Roberts's title names the place as Sarepta, the ancient town the Bible calls Zarephath, on the Phoenician coast near Sidon, in what is now Lebanon. He sketched it during his 1839 journey through the region, and it appears in *The Holy Land*, the large lithographic series that Louis Haghe translated from his drawings and that F. G. Moon published in London between 1842 and 1845. The town is best known from the story of the prophet Elijah and the widow who shared her last meal with him. By the time Roberts visited, the site was largely ruins, which gives the print its quiet, melancholy air.
