Roberts sketched Jenin on April 19, 1839, during the Scottish painter's tour of the Holy Land, and the lithograph shows the town as a cluster of low stone houses set against the plain at the foot of the hills. Jenin sits on the northern edge of the Jezreel Valley, a fertile route between the coast and the Jordan that armies and merchants had crossed for thousands of years. Roberts's drawings were turned into lithographs by Louis Haghe for a multi-volume work published in London in the early 1840s, which helped European readers picture biblical and regional sites long before most of them could travel there.
