Few places in the Holy Land carry as many layers of history as Sebastia, the hilltop village built on the site of ancient Samaria. David Roberts sketched it on April 17, 1839, during his journey through the region, and Louis Haghe turned the drawing into this color lithograph for the first volume of *The Holy Land*, issued in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. Herod the Great rebuilt the city in the late first century B.C. and named it Sebaste in honor of the emperor Augustus, a name that survives in the village's modern Arabic and Hebrew forms. Roberts's views did much to shape how European readers pictured biblical sites, so the print records that vision as well as the ruins themselves.
