Roberts sketched the Great Sphinx at Giza on July 17, 1839, during the Egyptian tour that produced his best-known travel work. The stone lion-bodied figure, with the pyramids rising behind it, appears half-buried in sand, as it largely was when European travelers reached it. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawing into this color lithograph, which was issued as part 18 of *Egypt and Nubia* in London between 1846 and 1849. The plate shows how Roberts's on-site sketches were reworked for a British audience eager for images of the Egyptian monuments.
