Roberts's view of the Great Sphinx at Giza, which he spelled "Girzeh," shows the monument with the great pyramids rising behind it, a pairing that by then had become the standard image of Egypt for European viewers. Roberts, a Scottish painter, traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839 and made his drawings on the spot. Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for the multi-part series *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F. G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Prints like this one helped shape how Victorian readers pictured ancient Egypt, and the Sphinx's worn, weathered face is worth a close look.
