Rather than the Giza monuments that dominate most views of Egypt, this print looks south across the Nile toward the pyramids of Dashour and Taccara, the latter the site now usually called Saqqara. David Roberts made his drawings on the spot during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred them to stone for the color lithographs issued in parts by F.G. Moon in London between 1846 and 1849. The series was widely read in Britain, and its carefully toned sheets gave Victorian readers a vivid picture of a land most of them would never see for themselves.
