The Dead Sea, seen from the western shore with the mountains of Moab rising across the water, is the subject of this lithograph, which David Roberts drew on his 1839 journey through the Holy Land. Roberts, a Scottish painter who had reached Egypt and Palestine that year, made his sketches on the spot, and the print was worked up by the lithographer Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, the large series issued in London between 1842 and 1845. Its date of April 4, 1839, ties the view to a particular day of travel, and the hard light on the still, bitter water shows why Roberts's views of the region were so widely admired in his time.
