Roberts sketched Tiberias on April 22, 1839, during the tour of the Holy Land that produced his drawings for the *Holy Land* series. The view shows the town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, a lake the Gospels tie closely to Jesus's ministry. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's sketch into a color lithograph, which F. G. Moon published in London between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's images of the region were widely reproduced in the nineteenth century, and this one shows how a Western artist of the period pictured a town that was then a small, largely Ottoman-era settlement.
