Roberts sketched this shrine at Nazareth on April 20, 1839, during the tour of the Near East that produced his best-known views of the region. Christian tradition holds that the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear a son on this spot, and the site has drawn pilgrims for centuries. The print appeared in *The Holy Land*, issued in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845, with the color lithographs made by Louis Haghe from Roberts's drawings. Its careful rendering of the shrine helps explain why the series proved so popular with Victorian readers.
