Roberts sketched this spring in Nazareth on April 21, 1839, during his journey through the Near East, and the scene shows the Fountain of the Virgin, the town's principal water source. Tradition holds that Mary drew water here, and the well has long served as a gathering place where women of the town came with their jars. The lithograph appeared in *The Holy Land* (London, 1842-1845), where Louis Haghe turned Roberts's on-site drawings into color plates. Its value lies in recording a daily village scene as it looked in the late 1830s, before the rapid changes of the later nineteenth century.
