Tiberias, on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, is the subject here, seen from the town walls with Safed visible on the hills in the distance. David Roberts made the drawing on April 22, 1839, during the Holy Land tour that produced the sketches for his series, and Louis Haghe later turned it into a color lithograph for the parts published in London by F.G. Moon from 1842 to 1845. Herod Antipas founded Tiberias around 20 CE, and the town later became one of the four holy cities of Judaism. The view joins the lake shore with the high Galilean country beyond, giving viewers a sense of the region's geography as well as its history.
