Roberts drew this view of the Convent of St. Saba, the Greek Orthodox monastery cut into the cliffs of the Kidron Valley southeast of Jerusalem, on April 4, 1839, during the travels that produced his Holy Land series. The lithograph was made by Louis Haghe and published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845, and it reached the public in the form of a colored plate for a bound volume rather than as a single sheet. Roberts's topographical work of this kind shaped how Victorian readers imagined the Holy Land, and the sheer height and fortified walls of the monastery, clinging to a gorge, are the features that most reward a close look.
