Drawn on the spot on April 5, 1839, during David Roberts's tour of the Near East, this view shows the chapel inside the Convent of St. Saba, the monastery built into the cliffs of the Kidron Valley east of Bethlehem. Roberts, a Scottish painter and Royal Academy member, made his sketches in the field, and Louis Haghe transferred them to color lithographs for *The Holy Land*, issued in London in parts from 1842 to 1845. The series gave European readers some of their first detailed visual access to sites in Palestine, and its atmospheric views of monastic architecture were widely admired.
