Few monasteries in the Holy Land sit as dramatically as the Convent of S. Saba, known today as Mar Saba, which David Roberts drew in April 1839. The community clings to the steep walls of the Kidron Valley southeast of Bethlehem, with towers and cells stacked into the rock. Louis Haghe transferred Roberts's drawing to the stone for the color lithograph, which was published in London between 1842 and 1845 in *The Holy Land*. The fortified walls that catalogers note here are a reminder that the monks had to defend the place as well as pray in it.
