The Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, drawn on April 14, 1839, is the subject of this color lithograph, which the Scottish painter David Roberts sketched on the spot during his tour of the Near East. Roberts traveled through Egypt, Nubia, and the Holy Land in the late 1830s, and his sketches were turned into lithographs by Louis Haghe for a series published in London between 1842 and 1845. The gate, built in the sixteenth century under Ottoman rule, was the busiest northern entrance to the walled Old City, so the plate captures a working street rather than a monument alone. Note the hand-applied color, which gave the series its popularity with European buyers.
