Sketched from the road leading to Bethany, a village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, this view was drawn by David Roberts on April 9, 1839, during his travels in the Holy Land. Roberts, a Scottish painter, made his sketches on the spot, and Louis Haghe later turned them into color lithographs for *The Holy Land*, published in London between 1842 and 1845. In the Gospels, Bethany is the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha, so the place carried deep scriptural meaning for the book's readers.
