This color lithograph shows the Greek church within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a site the record dates to April 11, 1839. The Scottish painter David Roberts made the original sketch on the spot during his Near Eastern travels, and the Belgian-born lithographer Louis Haghe turned it into a print for Roberts's *The Holy Land* series, published in London in the early 1840s. The church is traditionally identified as the site of Golgotha and Jesus's tomb, and its chapels have long been shared among several Christian communities, a layered arrangement that Roberts's views made familiar to European audiences.
