Roberts's sketch of the Church of the Purification is dated April 5, 1839, the day he recorded it on the spot during his tour of the Near East. The church takes its name from the Christian feast of the Purification, which marks the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and it stood among the many Christian sites that drew Western travelers to Jerusalem in the 1830s. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawing into this color lithograph for *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon, and the print shows the same mix of careful architectural detail and atmosphere that made the series popular.
