Roberts made this view of Jerusalem from the south on April 12, 1839, during his journey through the Near East, and the sketch was later worked up as a color lithograph. The print appeared in *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, issued in London by F.G. Moon in parts between 1842 and 1845, with the stone work done by Louis Haghe. Roberts's on-the-spot drawings were prized for their accuracy, and these plates helped set a mid-century European picture of the Holy Land for readers who would never make the trip themselves.
