Dated April 10, 1839, this view of Calvary within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was drawn on the spot by David Roberts during his travels in the Near East. Louis Haghe turned the sketch into a color lithograph, which F.G. Moon published in parts between 1842 and 1845 as part of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*. Victorian readers, few of whom could make the journey themselves, admired the series for its careful architecture and atmospheric light. Calvary, the traditional site of the Crucifixion, is the focus here, set inside the church's crowded interior.
