The Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem is the subject here, a site tied in the Gospel of John to the healing at the pool, and Roberts drew it on the spot in April 1839 during his tour of the Near East. The lithograph was published in London in 1842 as one plate in The Holy Land, a multi-volume series issued between 1842 and 1845 and printed in color by Louis Haghe from Roberts's sketches. Roberts was a Scottish painter whose views of Egypt, Syria and Palestine were enormously popular with Victorian readers, many of whom had never seen these places. Look closely at the ruined arches and the tangle of masonry around the basin, which show how the site looked to a European visitor in the 1830s.
