Drawn on the spot on April 10, 1839, this view of the Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre captures the Jerusalem church during David Roberts's tour of the Near East that year. The church is built over what Christian tradition holds to be the site of Jesus's crucifixion and burial, and it has long been shared among several Christian communities, a arrangement that shaped its daily life and architecture. Louis Haghe transferred Roberts's sketch to a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845, which brought such views to a wide British audience.
