The Stone of Unction, the slab in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where tradition holds Jesus's body was prepared for burial, is the focus of this lithograph, dated to March 30, 1839, the day David Roberts sketched it on the spot. Roberts, a Scottish painter, spent months in the Levant in the late 1830s, and his drawings were turned into color lithographs by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. The plate shows pilgrims and worshippers crowding around the stone beneath the church's dim, lamp-lit interior, a scene that drew large European audiences who had never traveled to Jerusalem.
