Ashdod, one of the five Philistine cities named in the Bible, is the subject here, sketched by David Roberts on March 24, 1839, during the tour of Egypt and the Holy Land that produced his best-known views. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawing into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F. G. Moon in the early 1840s. Such plates let Victorian readers who would never make the journey see biblical places as they looked in the 1830s, when much of the region was still lightly visited by European artists. The print is worth noticing for how it blends careful topography with the romantic atmosphere that made Roberts's work so popular.
