Roberts sketched this view of Jaffa on March 26, 1839, during his tour of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East, and the scene is pinned to a specific day in the record's title. Jaffa was an old port city on the Mediterranean coast, and the modern city of Tel Aviv now surrounds its historic core. The print was made as a color lithograph by Louis Haghe from Roberts's drawing and published in London by F. G. Moon as part of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*. Its wide, traveler-oriented views made the Levant familiar to British readers in the 1840s.
