Dated March 18, 1839, this view of Hebron records a single day in the Judean hills, when David Roberts, the Scottish painter, was traveling through the Holy Land and sketching on the spot. The city, traditionally linked with Abraham and the Cave of Machpelah, carried deep biblical associations for European viewers. The finished color lithograph was made by Louis Haghe for *The Holy Land*, a multi-part series published in London between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's on-site drawings gave a European audience that would never see these places firsthand a picture of Palestine, so the image reflects a Victorian viewer's expectations as much as a traveler's record.
