Roberts sketched this view of Ramla on March 27, 1839, and the title links the town to ancient Arimathea, the home of Joseph, who in the Gospels buries Jesus. Founded in the early eighth century by the Umayyad caliph Suleiman, Ramla was a regional center that drew travelers and pilgrims through the nineteenth century. The color lithograph appeared in the second volume of Roberts's *The Holy Land*, issued in London in parts between 1842 and 1845, with the stone printing carried out by Louis Haghe from Roberts's drawings.
