Dated March 16, 1839, this color lithograph shows ruins that David Roberts sketched on the spot during his travels through the Holy Land. Roberts, a Scottish painter and Royal Academician, made the original drawings, and Louis Haghe transferred them to stone for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Plates like this one shaped how European readers pictured the biblical landscape, and the series remains one of the most widely reproduced records of the region in the 1830s.
