Bethany, the village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives a short walk from Jerusalem, is the subject here, and David Roberts drew it on April 1, 1839, during the long tour of the Near East that produced his famous series of Holy Land views. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's on-the-spot sketch into a color lithograph, and it was issued in parts by F. G. Moon of London between 1842 and 1845. Bethany is traditionally linked with the raising of Lazarus and with the household of Martha and Mary, which gives the scene its particular weight for visitors and readers of the Gospels.
