Drawn on the spot in April 1839, this view shows the sea fortress at Sidon, a stronghold on a rock just off the Lebanese coast that had been rebuilt and reinforced by Crusaders and later by Ottoman rulers. David Roberts, the Scottish painter and Royal Academician, traveled through the Levant in the late 1830s and turned his sketches into finished work. Louis Haghe then transferred the image into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F. G. Moon in the early 1840s. The print is a useful record of how European travelers saw the Levant's ruined and working monuments at the time.
