The print shows the rock-cut Tomb of St. James in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, the Kidron Valley that runs between Jerusalem's old walls and the Mount of Olives. Tradition links the tomb to the apostle James, and its carved facade and deep shadows were a favorite subject for nineteenth-century travelers. David Roberts sketched the scene on the spot in April 1839, during his journey through the Near East. Louis Haghe translated those sketches into color lithographs, which were issued in London in the 1840s as part of *The Holy Land*, a publication that gave European readers some of the first widely circulated views of the region.
