Cana, the Galilean village where the Gospel of John places the wedding at which Jesus turned water into wine, is the subject here, and David Roberts sketched this fountain there on April 21, 1839, the date given in the title. Roberts made his drawings during his travels through Egypt, Nubia, and the Levant that year, and Louis Haghe transferred them to stone for the lithographs. Published in color in parts from 1842 to 1845 as *The Holy Land*, the print is worth noticing for how it treats an ordinary water source as a scene of everyday village life, the kind of spring that supplied local households long before travelers came looking for its biblical associations.
