Cana of Galilee, traditionally identified as the village where Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding, is the place shown here, drawn on the spot by David Roberts on April 21, 1839. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawing into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, a series published in London by F.G. Moon in parts from 1842 to 1845. Plates like this one made Roberts's views of Biblical lands popular with Victorian readers who could not travel to the region themselves.
