Christian tradition places the angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary on the spot this chapel marks in Nazareth, and David Roberts recorded it on April 28, 1839, during his journey through Egypt and the Holy Land. The drawing reached the public in 1842 as a color lithograph by Louis Haghe. It was issued in London as part of *The Holy Land*, published in parts between 1842 and 1845, which became one of the most widely circulated visual records of the region. Roberts's close attention to the architecture and its setting gives the plate documentary value, and it also offered European viewers, many of whom knew Nazareth only from scripture, a concrete picture of the place.
