Roberts made his drawing of Nazareth on April 28, 1839, during the tour of Egypt, Syria, and the Holy Land that supplied the material for his publication. Louis Haghe transferred the sketch into a color lithograph, and it appeared in London through F.G. Moon in 1842 as part of *The Holy Land*. The series reached a wide European audience, and its views of towns such as Nazareth helped shape how many readers pictured the places named in the Bible.
