Drawn on the spot on April 21, 1839, this view of the Sea of Galilee, also known in the record as Genazareth, looks across the water toward Bashan, the upland region east of the lake. David Roberts, a Scottish painter, made the sketch during his travels in the Holy Land in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred it to stone for this color lithograph. It was issued in London by F.G. Moon as part of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, and its wide view of the lake and surrounding hills helped shape how European readers pictured the biblical landscape.
