Haifa appears here under the name Roberts used in his titles, Caiphas, with the mass of Mount Carmel rising behind the town. The Scottish painter David Roberts made the sketch on April 24, 1839, during his tour of Egypt and the Holy Land, and Louis Haghe later turned it into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*. Victorian readers who could not travel to Palestine prized such plates, and the view offers a glimpse of a coastal town still small and shaped by its harbor and the hills behind it.
