Mount Tabor, the rounded, wooded hill that rises alone from the plain of Esdraelon in Galilee, is the subject here, drawn on the spot by David Roberts on April 19, 1839. Roberts, a Scottish painter, spent months in the Near East that year sketching ruins and landscapes, and the sketches were later worked up into the lithographs issued in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. Louis Haghe, the Belgian-born lithographer who turned Roberts's drawings into color plates, gave the scene its soft, hazy light. The print is notable as an early European picture of the region, made when Tabor was still seen mainly through the lens of biblical story.
