The view shows the pyramids of Gerzah rising from the desert along the Nile, a less visited group than the famous monuments at Giza farther north. David Roberts made his sketches on his tour of Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and the color lithographs based on them were issued in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. Louis Haghe transferred Roberts's drawings to stone, so the finished plate reflects both the artist's eye and the printmaker's skill. Its value lies in showing how travelers of the period recorded ancient sites for European audiences.
