Seen from the river, the temple ruins at Luxor rise above the Nile, with their pylons and colonnades set against the water. David Roberts sketched the scene on the spot in 1838, during the travels in Egypt that produced his best-known work. Louis Haghe then turned the drawing into a color lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, which F.G. Moon published in London between 1846 and 1849. This plate appeared in the first volume, part 16, and it shows how the site looked to a European visitor in the late 1830s.
