Roberts sketched the Hathor temple at Dendera, in Upper Egypt, on December 7, 1838, during the tour of Egypt and Nubia that made him one of the best-known British painters of the Near East. The finished view was turned into a color lithograph by Louis Haghe and issued in parts by the London publisher F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The print is part 36 of the first volume, and it shows the temple's massive sandstone facade in the fine detail that made Roberts's views popular with Victorian readers. Its value today lies in recording the site as it stood before many later excavations and conservation efforts.
