Among the most familiar images of ancient Egypt from the nineteenth century are the views drawn by the Scottish painter David Roberts, and this plate shows the great temple of Hathor at Dendera, sketched by Roberts in December 1838 during his travels up the Nile. Louis Haghe turned the drawing into a color lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, a multi-part series published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The temple, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, is among the best-preserved Egyptian sanctuaries, and Roberts's record of its façade and columns preserves a picture of the site as European travelers then saw it.
