Dated December 4, 1838, this view is set at Thebes, the ancient Egyptian capital whose temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor still draw visitors. David Roberts, a Scottish painter and Royal Academician, made the original sketch during his tour of Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839. Louis Haghe transferred the drawing to stone, and the print appeared as part twelve of the first volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F. G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's lithographs did much to shape how European readers pictured the Nile monuments.
