Two seated colossi rising from the Theban plain give this view its subject, the Statues of Memnon, on the west bank of the Nile near modern Luxor. They depict the pharaoh Amenhotep III, and David Roberts sketched them on December 4, 1838, during the Egyptian journey that produced much of his best-known work. Ancient visitors claimed the northern statue sang at dawn, a sound later attributed to cracks in the damaged stone warming in the sun, until Roman repairs reportedly silenced it. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's sketch into this color lithograph for the eleventh part of *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in London between 1846 and 1849.
